Cadman Plaza Park

Did you know that Cadman Plaza Park used to be home to the Brooklyn Elevated train tracks?  The original BRT (Brooklyn Rapid Transit) lines branched out from a station next to City Hall at the Manhattan end of the Brooklyn Bridge.  From there lines branched out to Metropolitan Av, Jamaica, Canarsie, Coney Island, Bay Ridge and Ozone Park.  Fulton St. El trains also began at a ferry terminal at the foot of what is now called Old Fulton St.  The Brooklyn Bridge tracks were removed after termination of service about 1941, and the longest lasting unimproved El structure (short wooden car trains only) was the Myrtle Av. El between Jay St. and the current connection to the (J)(Z) lines, which remained in service until 1969.  The area now occupied by the park in the current photo below was originally home to several newspapers.
